Martina lives in North Belfast and contacted WOMEN’STEC for support around gaining employment.   Martina had worked previously in a family business doing roofing work, however, there was a downturn in the industry and she found herself out of work, and then cared for her terminally ill mother.  Martina was unemployed for 18 months when she came to WOMEN’STEC.

Martina completed DIY, first aid training, and CV/job application and interview skills training, which greatly enhanced her skills and confidence.   WOMEN’STEC  encouraged Martina to apply for Belfast City Council’s Pre-Recruitment Programme for Cleansing and Recycling Operatives, and she was successful in securing a place.  WOMEN’STEC kept in regular contact with Martina during her training, and encouraged her to go on to apply for one of three temporary posts at Belfast City Council. Martina was successful in her application and started as a Recycling Operative (temporary contract) in January 2017.

Martina says, “I’d been out of work for some time and my confidence and self-esteem was quite low.  When I was put forward for the Council’s pre-recruitment programme by WOMEN’STEC I felt much more confident in myself and I felt more capable in completing a job application.  Previously, I had lacked confidence to even apply for jobs, but the training and support I received made a very big difference, particularly for the job interview.  I’m delighted to be working, and I’m delighted with my job at Belfast City Council where I’m enjoying working as part of the Recycling Team.
