WOMEN'STEC Gala Awards 2019

On Thursday the 21st of March, the annual WOMEN’STEC Gala Awards took place at Belfast City Hall to recognise and showcase the achievements of women who have taken part in WOMEN’STEC’s award winning training in non-traditional skills.

It was a truly inspirational day celebrating all the brilliant women who have been a part of WOMEN’STEC over the last twelve months, which was a period of change and development for the organisation. WOMEN’STEC is proud to have been able to offer a diverse range of programmes and the Gala Awards was fantastic opportunity to reflect on what the women have achieved.

Over 130 women completed the Building Futures programme for women seeking to return to employment; including the PROUD project, a cross-community programme funded by the Central Good Relations Unit and The Executive Office; Connecting Communities Programme funded through the Northern Ireland Executive and Urban Villages; PASS Project funded through ESF and TWN; and Promoting Opportunities Programme #notjustforboys funded through the Northern Ireland Executive, Urban Villages, the Ireland Fund, CITB and the NIHE.

The Gala Awards recognised over 150 OCN qualifications gained by WOMEN’STEC students over the past year in courses such as electrics, plumbing, carpentry, tiling, painting & decorating and horticulture, alongside personal development courses, helping to prepare them for future employment.

Lynn Carvill, Chief Executive of WOMEN’STEC stated, “Without doubt, this has been the biggest WOMEN’STEC student gala awards yet … and this is proportionate to the increase in the number and breadth of the programmes we have been able to offer our students this year.  It is a delight to celebrate student achievement and share this success with our various programme partners and supporters.  A huge well done to everyone involved.”

Congratulations to all our participants for their involvement in and contribution to our programmes over the last year and special congratulations to those who won awards, including; Fiona Johnston – Student of the Year 2019; the best piece award winners and Sophie Love, who received a special award (provided by OCN NI) for being a role model for young women. WOMEN’STEC looks forward to the year ahead and welcoming all the new students who will be coming through our doors to learn new skills and gain new experiences – we’ll see you at the Gala Awards 2020!
