Local Growth Fund campaign event at Stormont

Yesterday, WOMEN’STEC took part in the Local Growth Fund campaign event at Stormont, organised by NICVA and joined a range of organisations from the community and voluntary sector.

The event highlighted some serious concerns about the proposed changes to funding aimed at tackling economic inactivity. As it stands, funding is expected to drop by a staggering 64% due to a mandated split of 70% capital and 30% revenue. This doesn’t fit the needs of Northern Ireland.

If these changes aren’t addressed, they could take away support from over 11,000 individuals each year, jeopardize at least 400 skilled jobs in the voluntary and community sector. They could increase the pressure on health and other public services, and potentially reverse the progress made in labour market inclusion.

The hardest hit will be those already facing significant barriers, including women, disabled individuals, caregivers, people with long-term health issues, and young people who are not in education, employment, or training.

Helen Kerr, Head of Business Development at WOMEN’STEC, voiced her concerns: “The reality is stark. Decisions like this risk undoing years of progress and will disproportionately impact the most marginalized in our communities. These are proven, people-focused services that work, and without proper investment, those furthest from the labour market will once again be left behind.”

Rachel Miles, Programme Manager for Building Futures at WOMEN’STEC, added: “Through programs like Building Futures, we see firsthand the difference that sustained revenue funding makes. Cutting this support will not only limit opportunities for individuals but will also put extra pressure on public services and weaken the pathways into employment that communities depend on. WOMEN’STEC was proud to stand alongside partners yesterday, to raise awareness of these risks and to advocate for funding decisions to be made.”
